Inside/Out
Thank
you for your interest in performing on the Inside/Out stage at Jacob's
Pillow Dance Festival.
In
good weather, performances take place on an open-air platform—The
Marcia and Seymour Simon Performance Space (the Inside/Out stage)—in
the center of the Pillow's site, and close to all other venues. The
audience sits on low wooden benches, at picnic tables, or on folding
chairs, and views the performance against the backdrop of the Berkshire
hills. Both the artists and audience are surrounded by nature.
Inside/Out
is free and open to the public. It is a venue geared especially
toward educating audiences about dance in a relatively informal
way, and giving the opportunity for all people, regardless of their
financial means, to experience dance. The audience that attends
Inside/Out comprises both dance aficionados who come to Jacob's
Pillow on a regular basis and who are quite educated about dance,
as well as newcomers to the art form. Inside/Out is attended
by everyone from babies to elders—and sometimes a few dogs, too.
Inside/Out
performances take place Wednesday through Saturday nights during
the ten-week Festival. The performances begin at 6:30pm and
must be completed by 7:20pm. The duration of the artist's program
is approximately 40 minutes, followed by a brief question and answer
session with the audience. As it is summertime, the performances
take place in daylight.
The
Inside/Out stage is 40' wide by 28' deep, with a slight rake. The
plywood platform is quite good for dance, and it is covered with
white Rosco flooring. Entrances are downstage left and upstage
right with a crossover between the entrances. There is a small
area for costume changes, which is underneath the stage and out
of view of the audience. The stage is lit only by the natural
light of the outdoors. As you see from the photographs, there
are no wings, curtains, lights, or masking. There is a good
sound system. The crew is made up of one staff production person
to coordinate all technical needs and one operations intern to run
sound during the performance. A general management intern will
assist with non-technical logistics. Please note additional technical
specifications in the PDF here.
When
the elements threaten, Inside/Out becomes “outside/in.” One
of the studio rehearsal spaces, approximately 35' wide by 25' deep,
is reserved for the event, and chairs are set up for the audience.
Inside/Out
artists are paid an honorarium of $500. Jacob's Pillow also
provides meals in the Stone Dining Room (our resident cafeteria)
and entry into the main-stage performances, when available. Jacob's
Pillow does not provide transportation. All Inside/Out performances
are videotaped for archival purposes. Artists are given a video
copy of their performance, free of charge to use as they like, as
long as they credit that the performances took place at Jacob's
Pillow Dance Festival.
